Welcome to WMED 2012, at BSU...

Found the main ballroom getting ready to start.

Welcome to WMED 2012: Elevator Music slide show = win. iPad unable to blog photos = epic fail.

===================================================

Keynote: Rahul Sarpeshkar MIT - bioelectronics

Description of the human ear. Electrical analysis of hearing - amazing. 150mV PSU, 10 microsecond discrimination.

Outer ear = antenna
Middle ear = impedance matching network
Inner ear = wave spectrum analyzer
Inner hair cell = peak-detecting demodulator

Modeled RF Cochlea - Actual bionic ear processor 251 micro watt

Glucose battery - working in lab to produce energy

Invited Tutorial: Phase-Change Memory: Replacement or Transitional - Dr. Chung Lam

History of phase change:
Controversial David Pearson
Early patent - 1963
1968-1999 (not much progress)
Progress proceeded due to scaling in 1999. As we scale the volume of phase change area reduces, allowing a realistic amount of power consumption.
2011 - CEO samsung, "customers did not adopt memory."
Scalability - current density increases too much! Ronald Neale

Is PCM possible to replace NAND/DRAM? No
What are challenges?
-manufacturing cost
-alternative to NOR, but not competitive with NAND/DRAM once scaled.

What is PCM good for? Transformational - Storage class memory in Enterprise Systems.

Invited Talk: Nano-Electro-Mechanical Memory Technology for future compact and ultra-low-power integrated systems - Tsu-Jae King Liu

The Big Picture
DMD display technology.

Hysteresis in switching

Types:
Phase Change
MEMS
NVM electro mechanical cell:
Air-gap ~13nm formed by removing a sacrificial layer of LTO using HF vapor.**

Invited Talk: Nanophotonic Interconnection Networks for Performance-Energy Optimized Computing - Keren Bergman

How to get optical interconnect close to chip?
Optics can be put directly on chip, but interface needs development.

===================================================

Invited Talk: Emerging Magnetic Memories - William Gallagher

Material Challenges
